What is Faux Fur?
Faux Fur is the current descriptive name for a man-made textile that replicates or mimics the look and feel of naturally occurring animal fur skin.
It has many other descriptive names, such as
o Fake Fur
o Fur Fabric
o Pile Fabric
o Artificial Fur
o Imitation Fur
o Plush Fur
Faux Fur is manufactured in a mill or factory and can be made utilising different technologies, the most commonly process used now is Sliver Knitting, but there is a newer technology called Double Raschel that is being used more often today.
There are other processes such as Sliver Knit Jacquard, Sliver Knit Needle Out, Sliver Knit Heat Shrink, Discharge Print, Embossed, Tipped, Double Faced Loom Woven, Needle Punch, Warp Knit, Brushed Pile, Glue Adhered Pile.
Faux Fur has several characteristics that can be measured or accurately described: -
Construction Type of Manufacturing Process (as described above)
Width The width of the fabric/roll
Pile Height The height of the pile, can be 2 different pile heights ie. 20/25mm
Weight Faux Fur Fabric Weight is often noted as Grams Per Lineal Metre and usually reflects the density of the fibres
Composition The type of fibres employed
Acrylic, Modacrylic, Polyester, Mohair, Wool, Silk, Alpaca, Viscose, Nylon
Colour The colour of the fibres
Finish Tipped, Printed, Jacquard, Embossed, Cut, Stranded, Pelted, Hi-Lo Pile
